How to make confectioners’ sugar at home

To make frosting, royal icing, and macarons, there is one essential ingredient, confectioners’ sugar (= icing sugar). So here goes how to make icing sugar at home.

* Confectioners’ sugar = icing sugar = powdered sugar; table sugar = granulated sugar

Icing Sugar – Confectioners’ Sugar Recipe


    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch


First in a blender add granulated sugar and cornstarch. Cornstarch is added to prevent clumping.

You can use a coffee grinder or any blender such as a small smoothie blender, or a bigger aluminum blender.

Turn the blender on and blend until the mixture is powdery. It takes only a few minutes.

Store the homemade confectioners’ sugar in an airtight container.


A blender is better to make icing sugar than a food processor. In contrary, you can use both a food processor and a blender to make caster sugar because caster sugar is not as fine as icing sugar. Read my how to make caster sugar post.
