How to Check If Baking Powder Is Expired

Sometimes your cake doesn’t rise and you wonder what went wrong? Probably it’s time to check the expiration date of your baking powder. Or, you can do a small experiment yourself to see if it’s still potent.

Continue reading about how to tell if baking soda is potent or not.

How to Check If Baking Powder Is Expired

Add a teaspoon of baking powder into a cup of hot water.

If it bubbles actively, it is good to use.

And Baking Soda

Add 1/4 teaspoon of acid (e.g. vinegar) in hot water and stir in 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

If it actively bubbles up, then it’s okay.

It was the baking tip of the week. Tomorrow it’s Clafoutis aux cerises, Cherry Clafoutis. Bye for now.

>> TESTING FLOUR?

Hi Eugenie, Can you do a video on how to check if expired flour can still be used or not? thanks:)

EugenieKitchen
Hi Siu, Check the expiration date. And if your flour is dry, smells fine, has no bugs, and tastes good when baked/cooked, that should be okay. There is no instant chemical test to see whether or not flour is good.

  1. Eungie 🙁 I just wanna say that whenever I bake cupcake or anything with b.powder or b.soda , it always has that particular smell, and to be honest it smells quite doughy and nasty.Basically It ruins my cake.Like last time I baked some chocolate cupcake and that smell was really horrible, still edible but yeah I just can’t stand it.What’s wrong 🙁
